What Will Learn?

This course is part of the Accelerated Master’s program in Grief Counseling at AITU. It is a 4-hour semester course that should be completed within 6 weeks. The aim of this course is to familiarize students with counseling clients from various cultures; by examining their own cultural background; then identifying the existing differences of people from various cultures; finally by the development of effective interventions for their clients. Finally, supplemental readings and videos speaking more specifically about cultural variations in understanding and processing grief and bereavement and to provide them with a working knowledge of how to be aware of/sensitive to cultural diversity while engaging in grief therapy.

Multicultural Aspects of Grief Counseling

Society is no longer comprised of one particular culture. Multiculturalism has become a growing trend in the United States and other western countries in the world. If you ever become a grief counselor, you’re likely going to have a culturally diverse range of patients. It is essential to understand those differences as you listen and advise them about their problems. Then you can be a more effective counselor to people of any culture.

Multicultural Aspects of Grief Counseling is a required course of the Accelerated   Master of Grief Counseling Degree program at American International Theism University. The purpose of the course is to teach students how to counsel patients from various cultures. The curriculum will include the following lessons:

• How to examine a patient’s cultural background?
• How to identify the existing differences of people from various cultures?
• How to effectively intervene and help culturally diverse patients?

Students will get to utilize supplemental readings and videos that speak more specifically about cultural variations. These educational materials are designed to help students understand the concept of processing grief and bereavement. That way, they can develop a working knowledge of cultural diversity awareness while engaging in grief therapy with a patient.

Once you complete the Multicultural Aspects of Grief Counseling course, you will receive four credit hours on your academic record at American International Theism University.
